In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is a remembrance of the defeat of French forces at the Battle of Puebla by Mexican general Ignacio Zaragoza on May 5, 1862. While the French would push back and ultimately take Mexico City, it was a huge morale boost to the Mexican forces, who would finally expel the French in 1866, with help from the US.
